Airlines divided over allocation of the bilateral rights of Jet Airways

New Delhi: The issue of how to allocate the bilateral rights of grounded Jet Airways has divided the airline industry, with the older carriers pitted against the more recent entrants.

While IndiGo, GoAir and Spice-Jet had opposed the model adopted to award Jet’s international rights, based on an airline’s domestic capacity, Vistara commended the procedure.

“We would… like to highlight that the entire process was highly efficient, open and transparent,” Vistara CEO Leslie Thng said in a letter to the ministry, which ET reviewed.
From Jet’s flying rights, Vistara got permission to fly 28 flights per week to Singapore, Thailand and Dubai. IndiGo got the largest number of 84 flights a week, followed by SpiceJet at 77 flights per week and GoAir 35 flights per week.
IndiGo, GoAir and SpiceJet have complained to the ministry and the PM’s Office about the process followed in awarding the rights and the number of rights.
A government official said these rights were awarded for a temporary period only and a committee is likely to be formed to examine the procedure followed. ET first reported last week that a panel would look into the complaints by airlines and reallocate rights.
“The government has also received a letter from the National Company Law Tribunal to preserve all the rights that Jet Airways has till a new owner is found for the airline. So, the rights will continue to be allocated on a temporary basis,” said the official who did not want to be identified.
