Contract staff at airport falls while cleaning canopy, dies

Chennai: A worker at the city airport cleaning the canopy installed over a parking lot died after he fell from the lift of a machine on Wednesday. Standing on a box raised by the lift, he was cleaning it when the accident occurred in front of the international arrival terminal at 5.15pm.
Airport police said Manikantan, 30, from Pallavaram, a contract worker engaged by the maintenance contractor, was standing on a machine similar to forklifts, designed for high level access to buildings, when he lost balance and fell. He died on the spot, said an official, adding that he must have fallen from the height of a three-storey building.
The body was sent to Chromepet government hospital for postmortem. Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been using the machine to clean the glass frontage of terminals, roof, walls and the white metal canopies over the car park.
