Customs seize 971 gm gold valued at Rs 34L, arrest one at airport

Mangaluru: Customs at Mangalore International Airport on Saturday thwarted two attempts to smuggle in gold of 24-carat purity from as many passengers and seized 971.059 grams of gold from their possession valued at Rs 33.99 lakh.
Both passengers – one from Kumbala and the other from Kasaragod—who arrived in different flights from Dubai to Mangaluru were nabbed with gold in paste form ,stashed in their rectums.
Sources privy to thwarting the smuggling attempt told TOI that both accused were first-time offenders. While sleuths seized 652 grams of gold valued at Rs 22.82 lakh from a youth from Kumbala, they recovered 319.059 grams gold out of 422 grams of substance stashed by the other youth from Kasaragod. The value of this gold seized is estimated at Rs 11.17 lakh. The youth from Kumbala has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
