Efforts pay off, Air India to restore three flights from Vij

Vijayawada : In good news for fliers from the city, Air India has decided to restore a few flight services which had been cancelled in recent time. The YSRC-led state government had focussed its attention on taking corrective measures after flight services were withdrawn to some major cities in the country. Responding positively to the state government’s efforts, Air India has decided to restore a few key services from the city.
The Vijayawada airport recorded an immense growth in recent times. Once a minor airport in South India, with less than 12 flight movements a day in 2014, the airports now serves 7 lakh passengers on a daily basis.

In efforts to develop the airport, the existing 2,286 metre runway was extended to 3,360 metres to handle bigger aircrafts. Two separate terminals for international and domestic flights were also built.

The cancellation of the direct flight to Singapore owing to the state government’s lack of interest in providing viability gap funding (VGF) had severely irked passengers. Later, Air India also withdrew flight services from the city to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.

When Machilipatnam MP Vallabhaneni Balashouri submitted a representation to the Air India, the Air India chairman directed authorities to restore the Visakhapatnam to Vijayawada flight from August 4. The Delhi-Vijayawada-Delhi flight is also going to be restored from August 5. Additionally, the Delhi-Vijayawada flight via Hyderabad is also going to be restored from September 15.
