Visakhapatnam: Concerned over losing air connectivity to two major destinations in the state— Tirupati and Vijayawada from Visakhapatnam, members of Andhra Pradesh Air Travellers Association (APATA) has expressed displeasure over the withdrawal of Alliance Air’s flight services.
Alliance Air is currently operating an afternoon daily flight which flies from Visakhapatnam via Vijayawada to Tirupati. However, the carrier has decided to withdraw its services from the Port City from Thursday. Airport sources said that Alliance Air has proposed to shift the base of its ATR72 aircraft to Hyderabad and operate from there.
Speaking to TOI, PLK Murthy, a frequent flyer said, “Time is a constraint for most people now. People do not mind shelling out more money to save time, which is why they choose to fly instead of travelling on trains. It is really unfortunate that Visakhapatnam will have no air connectivity to Vijayawada, the business hub of the state and Tirupati, the spiritual hub.”
“I have meetings, conferences and seminars to attend on a regular basis in Vijayawada. My family also frequents Tirupati. Losing connectivity will make it difficult for people like us who travel to these destinations on a regular basis,” Srinivas, a city-based businessman lamented.
Vice president of APATA, O Naresh Kumar accompanied by independent director of Air India Ltd D Purandeswari met CS Subbhaya, CEO of Alliance Air and Ashwani Lohana, chairman and managing director of Air India in New Delhi to discuss this issue. According to Air India, the carrier is moving out from this sector due to commercial reasons as this route is not as profitable as other sectors.
