Haj pilgrimage begins in Kerala

Malappuram: Haj pilgrimage under the Kerala state haj committee began on Sunday.
The flight carrying first batch of 300 pilgrims left Karippur for Madina at 2.30pm. Haj affairs minister K T Jaleel flagged off the Saudi Airlines’ flight SV 5749.
Prior to the flagging of ceremony a farewell meet was organized for pilgrims at state haj house. Chairman of state haj committee C Muhammed Faizi presided over the function. Secretary of Kerala Muslim Jamaath Ibrahim Khaleelul Bhukhari led the prayer session. District police chief of Malappuram U Abdul Kareem and Haj cell officer S Najeeb also spoke. Hajis were welcomed at the airport, by airport director Sreenivasa Rao, and officials of Saudi airlines.

Among the 300 pilgrims in first flight, as many as 167 are women. The second flight which departed at 3pm, has 160 women pilgrims. Saudi airlines will operate three services to Madina on Monday.
Saudi Airlines will operate a total of 36 services from Karippur carrying 300 pilgrims in each aircraft till July 20. Air India will operate eight haj service from Nedumbassery, which is second haj embarkation point in state, from July 14 to 17. This year pilgrims would directly fly to Madina.
