PACA lauded by ICAO for handling of India-Pakistan airspace closure in February

Muscat:  The Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) has received a letter of commendation from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for excellent cooperation during emergency situations, such as the recent India-Pakistan airspace closure.

Mohamed Khalifa Rahma, regional director, ICAO Middle East (MID) Regional Office, in his letter of appreciation stated that it was his honour to extend sincere gratefulness to PACA and in particular to the Air Traffic Management (ATM) Directorate for being an essential contributor to the successful implementation of the ATM contingency arrangements at the regional and inter-regional levels.

“In particular, those related to the issue of India-Pakistan that led to the closure of Afghanistan and Pakistan airspaces. PACA was able, since day one of the India-Pakistan crisis on February 27, 2019, to implement new contingency routes’ measures in a timely, collaborative and effective manner, despite the challenges as Muscat Flight Information Region is already operating under contingency scenarios due to the crisis in the Middle East region,” he said in the letter.

ICAO MID region is the bridge for traffic between Europe and Asia Pacific. “In this respect, Oman’s support ensured the continuity of the traffic flows across the MID region from/to Asia Pacific through the safe accommodation of the rerouted traffic circumnavigating the impacted area,” Rahma added.
