Pilots of SpiceJet flight that overshot Mumbai airport's runway grounded

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday grounded the pilots of SpiceJet's Boeing 737 that overshot Mumbai airport's main runway on Monday night. Since Sunday, six flights, including SpiceJet's Boeing 737, were involved in runway overshooting and tails strikes in India. The DGCA on Wednesday grounded 12 pilots who operated the six flights. The regulator has also begun issuing show-cause notices to them and initiated probes into the mishaps.

“We are going to take strict action if it is established that the incidents happened due to crew error or incorrect landing. We are looking at the incidents in totality to see if any other factor/s led or contributed to the occurrence. The idea is to avoid a repeat,” said a senior official. The regulator will give the pilots 15 days to respond.

An initial probe into the most serious of these incidents—SpiceJet’s Boeing 737—suggests this happened due to unstabilized aircraft approach. “Initial probe shows the aircraft touched down at a high speed of about 1,600m, ahead of the threshold of runway 27 and overran. Its nose wheel and landing gear collapsed,” say sources.

Sunday saw two flights overshooting runways on landing—SpiceJet Bombardier Q400 in Surat, AI Express Boeing 737 in Mangalore. A GoAir Airbus A320 suffered a tail strike in Ranchi on Sunday. An AI Express Boeing 737 also suffered a tail strike after a bouncy landing in Calicut on Monday. And on Tuesday, a SpiceJet B737 veered off the wet runway in Kolkata on landing and broke four runway lights. Luckily no one on board these six aircraft was injured.
