Squatters still occupy Bokaro airport land

Bokaro: Anti-encroachment drive in Sector 12 here to clear the site for the proposed expansion of the airport has not started despite an eviction deadline of July 17 due to a lack of cooperation between the Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL), which owns the land, and the district administration.
On Monday, BSL, through a public announcement, appealed to more than 150 slum dwellers along the boundary wall of the airport to vacate but on Tuesday, it had to stop the announcement after it did not find any police support for the second consecutive day.
BSL’s chief of communication Manikant Dhan said, “We were making public announcements to vacate upon the directives of district administration. But our team returned from the site today without making any further announcement when they did not find a police team there, even after being assured of support from police.”
Bokaro DSP Gyan Ranjan said, “There isn’t any issue. BSL should communicate to us properly. Why don’t they call me? I will make police force available. Today, I was inspecting boundaries of the airport but I didn’t receive any information from BSL’s side.”
