5 flights diverted to city airport

Coimbatore: At least five flights headed to rain-battered Kerala were diverted to Coimbatore since Thursday afternoon.
A few passengers bound for the US and Europe from Kerala travelled to Coimbatore by road on Friday and took a flight so that they don’t miss their connecting flights.
A lot of regular fliers and flight enthusiasts in the city, who have been demanding flights to and from Dubai, were excited when they saw an Etihad flight standing in the runway of Coimbatore International Airport. Photos of the flight too were circulated on social media. However, airport authorities clarified that it was a one-off flight from Abu Dhabi headed towards Calicut that got diverted to Coimbatore, because flights could not land in the airport. “Besides the Etihad airline flight, we received three Air India Express flights — two flights diverted from Calicut and one from Mangalore,” airport director N Mahalingam said.
“A SpiceJet domestic flight headed to Kerala also landed in Coimbatore,” he said.
