Ahmedabad airport to get 3D scanning for check-in baggage

Ahmedabad: To make scanning of checked-in baggage more secure, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, is on the verge of implementing a new 3D scanning system for in-line baggage. The new system will be implemented at the domestic terminal i.e. Terminal-1 of the SVPI airport by August.
“The new system uses a 3D imaging technique to scan baggage and its contents, unlike the linear images of the baggage that were captured earlier. Using this, the screener will now get high-resolution 3D images and be able to view the bag from different angles and thus detect prohibited items, if any, with more ease and efficiency. The entire process will make the screening more secure,” said SVPI airport director, Manoj Gangal.
Sources said that this will also help minimize the rate of rejection as the capability of recognizing contents of the bag will be better.
The installation of the new system has been going on since the end of April and should soon be completed. Since the older system was being replaced, passengers travelling by the domestic terminal were made to get their baggage manually screened at the baggage scanning machines, before depositing them at the check-in or baggage drop counters.
Some five x-ray baggage scanning machines were installed at the domestic terminal for manual screening of luggage.
