Airfares from Srinagar surge 46%

Ahmedabad: After the Jammu & Kashmir administration cited security threats and directed tourists and Amarnath yatris to leave the state, airfares in the Ahmedabad-Srinagar sector have surged 46%. Currently, the minimum cost is Rs 11,000 for a two-stop flight, when booked a day before travel. The airfares along the same route for Monday, however, stood at a minimum of Rs 8,400, albeit for a one-stop flight with a layover.
Tour operators said that because the Amarnath shrine is near Srinagar, most pilgrims travel via that city.
Tour operators’ estimates indicate that current prices are almost three times the usual rates. “The normal price for a one-way trip to Ahmedabad from Srinagar is around Rs 7,500 for a direct flight,” said Anuj Pathak, secretary, Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Association of Gujarat (TAG). “The demand is high and connectivity is limited so prices have skyrocketed due to the surge-pricing policy implemented by some tour operators.” Pathak said that the demand has risen further because trains are running full. “However, the government must cap surge pricing, especially in cases of emergencies,” Pathak said.
Tour operators said that no direct flight for Sunday was available from Srinagar to Ahmedabad.
