Chandigarh, Mohali prefix before airport divides Punjab, Haryana

Chandigarh: Despite best efforts of the ministry of civil aviation, Government of India, the dispute of renaming the existing civil air terminal in Chandigarh remains a tough task for them to resolve.

The matter will now be tabled before the Union home minister Amit Shah’s Northern Zonal Council Meeting scheduled on September 3.

Significantly, both of the state governments have agreed over the name of the terminal as Sardar Bhagat Singh, but the main dispute is now over attaching Mohali or Chandigarh after the name.

Though, the civil aviation ministry of the central government tried its level best to convince the state governments to resolve the issue in the past, but none is ready to make unanimity on the subject. It will be crucial for the Union home minister to deal with the ongoing conflict.

In an action taken and status segment of the agenda item of Shah’s meeting, it has been revealed that the ministry of civil aviation, Government of India, in November 2018, intimated that the government of Punjab had passed a non-official resolution in the Vidhan Sabha to name the civil air terminal complex at the Chandigarh airport as ‘Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Sigh International Airport, Mohali’.
