Cial conducts biennial emergency mock drill

Kochi: A full-scale emergency mock drill was conducted at the Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) on Tuesday to ensure the operational readiness and security measures of the airport during emergency situations. The biennial exercise was conducted through the joint coordination of all security stakeholders at the airport and also with the support of various airlines, Indian Navy, Coast Guard, district administration, Airports Authority of India and several hospitals.

This year, the authorities staged an emergency situation of a fire in the engine of an Airbus320 aircraft of IndiGo airline. There were 166 passengers and nine crew members on board at that time. The pilot spotted the fire in the engine just before the scheduled take-off at 2.46pm and alerted the ATC. The smoke started emanating from the aircraft, triggering full-scale emergency alert at the airport.
