Cops out of sight, vehicles return to no-parking zone at Kolkata airport

Kolkata: The cat-and-mouse game continued to be played out at the airport between the cops and the drivers of VIP vehicles.
On Monday, cops at the airport had started booking drivers of VIP vehicles for illegal parking, asking government and defence vehicles parked on ‘no-parking’ zone to move to a separate channel for privileged vehicles. The result was evident as the carriageway outside the airport terminal wore a clutter-free look for most part of Monday. But as with most police drives, the number of cops thinned on Tuesday morning and the violators were back to their old practice. They clogged the ‘no-parking’ zone and ignored all instructions of the airport’s traffic marshals.
Among the violators was a VIP vehicle of a state cabinet minister. “We asked the cars to shift to the VIP bay but none was ready to listen to us. Then we called the cops for help,” said an official of the parking agency.
Post noon, a team of officers from Airport traffic guard came to the airport and began asking the errant drivers to get back to the parking bay. “Some drivers even asked for a notification but we just showed them the ‘no-parking’ boards and that a new bay had been made just for them. We even told them that we will take action if they were still adamant to park their cars there. The move worked and the drivers shifted to the new bay,” said an officer.
