Customs dept nabs smuggler with 602 gram gold at Surat airport

Surat: Customs department nabbed a gold smuggler who used an innovative method to smuggle in gold in Sharjah-Surat Air India Express flight on Tuesday.

Official sources said the accused had melted 602 grams of gold in thick paste form and hidden it in a capsule to get away from the electronic eyes of scanning machines of the customs department at Surat airport. The gold is valued at Rs19.35 lakh.

The incidents of gold smuggling are on the rise after Air India Express started direct flight between Surat and Sharjah a few months ago.
