First batch of haj pilgrims to return today

Gaya: The first batch of about 150 pilgrims from the state would be landing at the Gaya International Airport on Saturday evening. The pilgrims will be arriving by a special haj flight of Air India.
Air India has suspended its normal operation on the Gaya-Delhi route to fly back the pilgrims.

Though all pilgrims from Bihar are slated to return by August 28, the AI- 433 flight on the Gaya- Delhi route will remain suspended till September 16, as after flying the pilgrims from Bihar, the flight will be transporting pilgrims from other states.

“Air India enjoys monopoly over Haj flights and demand by different groups to go for competitive bid and allow private airlines to transport Haj pilgrims have not been conceded,” said haj committee coordinator AM Karimi alias Motibhai.

According to Karimi, 3,289 pilgrims from the state, including 1,415 women went to Saudi Arabia for haj pilgrimage this year.

As per Islamic tenet, all men and women physically fit for the long journey and having the means to undertake the pilgrimage are mandated to perform the ritual once in their life time. Poor and physically weak Muslims are exempted from haj performance.
