Fleecing of private vehicle owners rampant at airport

Chennai: Picking up or dropping people at the airport continues to be a hassle for private car owners. Those driving to arrival terminals are particularly troubled as they are being diverted into a parking lot and made to cough up Rs 40 each.
A free lane is available, but the small boards installed on pillars of a bridge are not easily visible and many are not able to spot them on time.
Several car owners say parking assistants are behaving like highway toll plaza bouncers, leaving them no option but to pay. Cars are not being allowed to go to the designated pick-up zone, they say. A month since the new system was introduced for entry and exit of vehicles, the problem remains unsolved. A commercial department official said boards had been placed at the entry points.
In July, when the new parking policy was introduced, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) announced that entry and exit to pick up and drop flyers will be free. This was different from the earlier system under which all cars were charged Rs 120 each if they did not leave the campus within 10minutes.
The AAI had employed a consultant to study problems in the parking area and the issue would be sorted out in about a few days, he said.
