Flyers fume over wet baggage, seek damages

Pune: Lack of a proper shed at Pune airport’s baggage make-up area is resulting in passengers’ luggage getting soggy and damaged, leaving flyers fuming and demanding compensation.
Airlines have also expressed serious concern over the issue.
“The first spell of heavy rains in the last week of June created chaos at the airport, but after that things have been okay. The new aerobridges are in operation, but passengers are complaining of having to walk in the rains to the new pickup point. However, the Pune AAI has announced a canopy in the arrival area, and sheds at the pickup point. Now the problem lies with the baggage make-up area,” an airport official told TOI.

Another official said that during the first heavy spell of rain in June luggage of many passengers got wet. “The situation has not changed much. In the absence of a proper shed, it becomes immensely difficult to protect the luggage. We try hard and use umbrellas to protect them and also plastic sheets at times, but it is just not enough,” the official said.

Many airlines operate 3 to 4 flights around the same time, and one can imagine the number of checked-in baggage that come to the airlines at one go. We have requested the authorities to take some steps to mitigate the problem, but in vain,” the official added.

Sources said that passengers become very angry after seeing the condition of the baggage. “They tweet and complain about their luggage getting wet and damaged, but we cannot do much. Many threaten to take legal action and demand compensation once they reach their destination and find their bags in a pitiable state. We request the AAI to take some steps fast,” the official pointed out.

A query on the issue was sent to the Pune airport authorities via e-mail on Wednesday evening, but a response from them was still awaited.
