Gold smuggling at Kannur airport: Custom official held

Kannur: In a cleansing drive in the Customs Department, a customs official who was earlier attached with Kozhikode airport has been suspended pending enquiry after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested him on Wednesday in connection with the recurrent cases of smuggling through Kannur International Airport.
According to Sumit Kumar, commissioner of customs, Kochi, the official, identified as Rahul Pandit, an inspector of Central Excise, posted in the Customs Preventive Divisions (CPD) in Kozhikode, has been suspended with immediate effect following his arrest, as it has been suspected that he is the kingpin of the smuggling racket.
Though the inspector was earlier posted in Kozhikode airport, he was transferred to CPD following suspicion of some shady deals, but he still maintained link with the racket, it is suspected, said the commissioner.
The intelligence wing is probing the involvement of a few other officials as well and disciplinary action would be taken against them as well under the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, if they were found guilty, said the officials.
According to DRI sources, more officials were being questioned by them in connection with the smuggling racket in Kannur and other airports and their arrest is likely very soon.
