Kolhapur airport proves to be a saviour in rescue operations

Kolhapur: The Kolhapur airport has proved to be the most useful resource in the entire rescue operation in the past one week.
When the entire city surrounded by the flood waters and all of its entry points were blocked, only the airport is providing the gateway for scheduled flights to the Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Tirupati. Non-scheduled flights to army, navy and coast guard for rescue operations all successfully landed at the airport.

Saturday was the busiest among all the days, as around 42 flights were operated on the airport with 34 of the rescue personnel and 8 routine scheduled flights to the respective destinations.

He added, “The 1,370 meters of runway of the Kolhapur airport will be expanded by around 1,000 metres more in future, after which it will be compatible with the international standards and will be able to land even the commercial aircrafts like Airbus as well. There are many formalities left, but we are working on it.”

He further said that with limited staff and resources, the airport has managed to support well to the rescue operations. It will continue to do so.
“Ours is the only airport with the refuelling facility available. Not even the Belgavi or Hubali airports has this facility at present. Earlier when the aircrafts arriving to the Kolhapur airport had to made sure they carry the reserve fuel to depart to their next destination, the limited availability of the fuel can restrict the number of passengers to be boarded on a plane. However, it is not the scenario anymore, with the availability of aviation fuel, the number of passengers to be carried have increased,” he said.
