Second KIA runway trial runs begin, to open on December 5

Bengaluru: Flights will start operating on the new south parallel runway (NSPR), the second runway at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), on December 5. Airport operator Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) announced this after trial runs began on the new airstrip on Tuesday.

IndiGo Airlines, SpiceJet and Air Asia India flights took part in the trial runs. After taking off from NSPR, they went till nearby Dhiburahalli village airspace before making their way back. The trials were conducted from 12.30pm to 3pm, during the scheduled main runway closure at the airport.

The 4,000m-long and 45m-wide second runway, equipped with CAT IIIB Instrument Landing System (ILS) which will enable flights to land even in dense fog and low-visibility conditions, will initially begin operations with CAT I standard certification. It will evolve to CAT III B as operations stabilise, said BIAL.

The new runway is also equipped with dual parallel taxiways, cross-field and rapid-exit taxiways. When the second runway becomes operational, BIAL plans to upgrade the existing runway and associated taxiways from CAT-I to CAT-III, which will help pilots land aircraft during low-visibility conditions.
