Kolkata: A 34-year-old school teacher from Jalpaiguri, who was flying from Bengaluru to Bagdogra on July 24, had a narrow escape when blood started oozing from her left arm mid-air. The flight made an emergency landing at Kolkata and the patient - by then in severe shock - was rushed to a hospital. Doctors found the main artery of her left arm had ruptured. After undergoing an emergency surgery at AMRI Dhakuria, doctors have sent Atreyi Chakraborty home.
The resident of Jalpaiguri's Deshbandhu Para had sustained a burn injury in her left arm last August. Even though the wound had healed, her arm had developed burn-scar contracture, restricting its movement. She had gone to a private hospital in Bengaluru where skin grafting and contractual surgery was performed on July 5. She and her husband stayed there till July 23 for regular dressing.
"Everything was fine on the flight and I was excited to be going home in a few hours. Suddenly, I felt something trickling down my arm. I looked down to see blood dripping from the surgery spot," Chakraborty recounted.
She cried out in panic and the flight attendant rushed to help her. Her husband Utpal was trying to stop the bleeding. Chakraborty heard a cabin crew member announcing if there was any doctor on the aircraft who could help. "I passed out only to regain consciousness the next day in the hospital," she told TOI.
The SpiceJet flight made an emergency landing in Kolkata and Chakraborty was rushed to a nearby hospital. By then, she had almost suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors resuscitated her and, as they did not have vascular surgery facility there, referred her to another hospital in Salt Lake. This one referred her to AMRI Hospitals Dhakuria.
