New Delhi: Vistara is having a big bang international launch. The full service JV airline of Tata Group and Singapore Airlines on Tuesday announced Bangkok as its third foreign destination after Singapore and Dubai. The busy rollout is going to be: Delhi-Singapore from Tuesday; Mumbai-Singapore from Wednesday; Mumbai-Dubai from August 21 and Delhi-Bangkok from August 27. All these flights are daily.
Like Dubai, Vistara will use its three-class cabin configuration — business, premium economy and economy — Airbus A320neo aircraft for Bangkok route. On Singapore route, the airline is using ex-Jet Boeing 737s with business and economy classes.
Vistara CEO Leslie Thng said: “Bangkok is a city that remains to be a favourite among travellers all year long. Besides, as a key gateway to Thailand, Bangkok continues to boost international commerce, trade and tourism in the country, making the business case more promising for us…. with our unique product and world-class service, we hope to make a significant difference to the flying experience of people travelling between India and Thailand, as well as to other geographies we step into.”
The Tata-Singapore Airlines JV will start getting wide body Boeing 787 Dreamliners from next January and will then start medium to long haul routes. Vistara’s international foray fills a crucial gap in Indian full service carriers (FSC) flying abroad after Jet shut down this April leaving Air India — which itself faces an uncertain future — as the only desi FSC to do so. The airline will now grow quickly and it remains to be seen if it takes the inorganic route to so by bidding for soon-to-be-sold-off Air India and its subsidiaries like AI Express. It had not bid for AI in the first attempt made to privatise the Maharaja last year.
