Airlines offer new flights from state

Thiruvananthapuram: The airline companies are planning to launch 29 additional flights every week in the upcoming winter schedule from the state to the Gulf countries. The airlines have also disclosed their plans to operate 39 new services in the domestic sector in the winter schedule beginning from the last week of October.

Airline companies, including Air India Express, Indigo, GoAir and SpiceJet, have come up with the plans to launch new services to Doha, Riyadh, Dammam, Muscat and Kuwait. The companies made the promises in their meeting with chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in the presence of Union civil aviation secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola.
While Air India Express has promised one flight per week in Kannur-Doha sector, Air India has offered to launch two additional services in Kannur-New Delhi sector. Already Air India operates five flights per week in the Kannur-New Delhi sector.
Indigo has informed the government that it would operate 21 flights per week — seven each for Riyadh, Dammam and Muscat — in the upcoming winter from various airports. In the domestic segment, Indigo has offered to launch two to four flights to Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad from Thiruvananthapuram every week, provided that VAT on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) is reduced to 1% from the existing 5% at Thiruvananthapuram airport. At present, VAT on ATF is 1% in Kannur airport while it is 5% in other airports in the state.
Go Air has promised seven services per week in the Kannur-Kuwait sector in their winter schedule. In addition, keeping in mind the rush in the Gulf sector during the Onam season, the Spicejet has plans to operate five flights in Kochi-Dubai sector from September 4 to 8, while Air India Express will operate one additional flight in Abu Dhabi-Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi sector on September 6. Other airline companies also have plans to add flights in winter schedule in the international sector, subject to regulatory approvals and availability of traffic rights.
In the domestic sector, SpiceJet has promised eight new flights. Daily service from Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram and back will be operational from October 8. It would also operate flights to Chennai and Bengaluru and back from Thiruvananthapuram, which will be operated six days a week. Another airline, Air Asia, plans to launch Delhi-Kochi (twice a week), Bengaluru-Kochi (four days a week, three are operational), Chennai-Kochi, Hyderabad-Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi, Thiruvananthapuram-Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram-Hyderabad, all of which will be once-in-a-week services to be operational from January.
Visthara airlines has promised one flight per day in Thiruvananthapuram-New Delhi sector. At the same time, GoAir has promised the highest number of new flights in domestic sector too, 22. This includes flights in Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur-Thiruvananthapuram, Thiruvananthapuram-Hyderabad, Bengaluru-Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur- New Delhi, Kannur- Goa and Kochi-New Delhi sectors.
