Airport trips turn costly as Uber bills for convenience

Visakhapatnam: The high convenience charges (which is automatically added to the passenger’s bill) being collected by the cab aggregators like Uber from the passengers at the airport has become a matter of concern. Regular cab users need to shell out more money if they choose to use a pick-up service from the airport.
Apart from the trip fare, every user is being charged Rs 100 to Rs 130 extra as tolls, surcharges and fees from passengers. Cab aggregators like Uber claim that they need to pay the convenience fee for airport rides, which is why the passengers are being charged. However, Vizag airport authorities stated that Uber does not pay the fees to the Airport Authority of India (AAI).

Ravikanth, a resident of Vizag, took an Uber ride last month from Vizag airport to Desapatrunipalem. He was charged Rs 419 for the ride (trip fare of Rs 304 and tolls and others Rs 115).

His repeated attempts to call Uber and messages to Uber through Twitter did not yield any response.

Subsequently, Ravikanth raised the matter on the Uber application.

In his post, Ravikanth wrote, “Vizag airport does not collect any charges and there are no tolls on my way to the destination, why have I been charged extra money? Please refund the toll money that has been charged.”

In their response through the app, Uber stated, “An airport convenience fee of Rs 57.75 is applicable during airport rides to Visakhapatnam airport (pickup or drop) from 12:00 am to 11.59 pm. Parking fees, cess fees and other relative taxes that need to be paid to the airport are included in this fee. As this is a fee that is passed on to the airport’s authorities, we are unable to compensate you for the same.”
