Chandigarh: Air India told to pay up for charging 574 USD for free service

Chandigarh: The district consumer disputes redressal forum, Chandigarh, has directed Air India to pay Rs 60,000 compensation to a daughter of former Chief Justice of India Dr A S Anand, for demanding money for service which they offered for free. They were also directed to refund 574 USD in her account.
The complainant, Jyotika Anand Malhotra, a resident of Sector 2, Chandigarh, had planned a visit to India to attend to her father, who was reportedly seriously ill and she departed from San Francisco, US, on December 1, 2017, and arrived in New Delhi on December 2, 2017. On arrival at New Delhi, she found that her father expired on December 1, 2017.
The complainant anticipating all well with her father and family, planned to go back to San Francisco on December 16, 2017, but later, on the death of her father, to attend the last rights and rituals, ceremonies consequent thereto, was compelled to postpone her journey to December 28, 2017.
On her father's death, which made her change the return date, the Air India in their reply boasted about giving her special treatment by way of offer of executive or business chair in the craft, but later, after three months, asked her to pay 324 USD as fare difference, which had been waived off at the time of issuance ticket with changed date, she said. Also, in June 2017, they raised another demand and asked her to pay 250 US dollar as penalty for change of flight.
