New Delhi: From Friday, if you are taking a Vistara flight, you may undergo facial recognition technology trials.
The trials will be carried out for three months with Vistara Airlines and, if successful, will be officially launched at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and subsequently at other terminals, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has announced.
According to the airline operator, passengers' entry will be automatically processed based on the facial recognition system at all check points, including entry into the airport and security check areas, and boarding, which will reduce manual intervention and the hassle of producing ID cards and documents.
Describing the process to be called the biometric-enabled seamless travel experience (BEST), DIAL says the initiative has been taken with the technical and software support of Vision Box, a multinational technology company headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal.
The enrolment process for the passengers with valid flight tickets and government ID proofs will start at the registration kiosk. Post this, their facial details will be captured by the camera. Simultaneously, the documents provided by the passenger will be validated by a CISF personnel present at the kiosk. He will physically check the applicant's ID proof and confirm it on the system. DIAL says there is no need to show an ID after this stage, with the boarding process and the security check being done on the basis of facial recognition alone.
"Security check queues will reduce and while checks will still take place, other processes will be done seamlessly as the technology reduces manual intervention and multiple checking of documents," said a DIAL spokesperson.
After registration, the passenger can approach the dedicated departure e-gate, which is fitted with facial recognition cameras. The e-gates will open automatically once the face is recognised. The flyer can then proceed towards the check-in counters to drop their bags. If they are not carrying any check-in bag, they can head straight to security screening. Once the passenger clears the security screening formality, he can go and board his flight through the dedicated boarding e-gates. These gates, too, open automatically after the camera recognises the passenger's registered face.
