Pune airport sees slide in international flyers, services in first 7 months

Pune: The international passenger footfall and aircraft movement at the city airport have decreased in the first seven months of 2019.

The figures of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the first seven months show the downward spiral of Pune airport’s performance of international flights. The total international flight movements which were over 200 in January , were just above 100 in June.

Sources told TOI that it was unlikely the airport would get any new direct international flight this year. Experts blamed the same on civic infrastructure.

“There are almost two months left for the summer schedule which started on March 31, and the airport does not have any new international flights. There is no information about any international flights coming to Pune this year. Earlier this year, the officials had spoken about a flight to Bangkok but there are no details,” an official said.

The civil aviation ministry provided Jet Airways’ empty international slots to a few destinations such as Dubai and Singapore, to Air India and its subsidiaries in June on a temporary basis.

Dhananjay Kumar, Air India’s spokesperson, said, “There are no plans for Air India or its subsidiaries to start a flight between Pune and Singapore. Dubai is out of the picture anyway as Air India Express already has a flight from Pune to Dubai,” he said.
