Shoes ‘worth’ Rs 72 lakh seized at IGI airport

New Delhi: A pair of shoes turned out to be worth Rs 72 lakh on close inspection by Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The reason: The passenger had concealed gold bars in the soles. The accused, an Afghan national, was flagged down after his shoes appeared to be much heavier than normal.
In another case, a man was arrested for concealing seven gold bars in his rectum. Both cases are under investigation.
Customs officials said that a 36-year-old Afghan national was arrested on Thursday for trying to smuggle gold bars in his shoes, weighing over 2kg. The passenger had arrived at Terminal-3 from Kabul when he was intercepted. The gold was seized and the man arrested under the Customs Act, officials said.
In the second incident, another man was arrested at IGI upon his arrival from the UAE on Thursday for allegedly smuggling gold bars. The gold, worth over Rs 31 lakh, was concealed in his rectum.
Customs officials said that Ahmed Washir, who arrived at Terminal-3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport from Dubai by an Air India flight, was intercepted after he had crossed the green channel.
