Vijayawada airport to have new flights from Nov

Vijayawada: Vijayawada international airport is likely to have a few new services by November this year with the state government having swung into action after some airline operators cancelled their services to various key destinations from the city. The airlines, however, agreed to restore flight services to Hyderabad, Delhi and Tirupati.
Meanwhile, some airlines cancelled their services to Delhi, Chennai, Cochin, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Singapore despite good occupancy. The state government had faced criticism from the opposition parties with the cancellation of services.
Vijayawada airport registered double-digit growth after the city became part of the capital region in 2015. A new domestic terminal building was built to meet the increasing demand and the runway was expanded to accommodate large aircraft.
Officials from the chief minister’s office (CMO) took up the issue and made a representation to the civil aviation ministry on the issue. In response, SpiceJet came forward to run direct flight services to Hyderabad from September 25. “There is no direct flight to Hyderabad till 11 am every day. Passengers face problems with this. SpiceJet will start operating a direct flight service in the morning and it will reach the city by 8 am every day. SpiceJet will also add another direct flight to Hyderabad in the evening. They have already started online bookings for these services,” said airport director, G Madhusudana Rao.
“Business circles were eagerly waiting for the Delhi-Hyderabad-Vijayawada daily flight. Air India has decided to restore this service from October 27. This aircraft had a good occupancy rate earlier and we hope to have a similar response from passengers in future,” the director said.
