Kozhikode: To take up maintenance and taxiway-related works, the Calicut International Airport will be partly closed during the afternoon for a period of four months beginning the last week of October.
The works are specifically for the upcoming operation of wide-bodied aircraft, for which Dubai-based Emirates and Air India have secured no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The major work involved expansion of the fillet that connected the taxiway to the runway so as to facilitate the smooth operation of flights under Code E, Calicut Airport Director K. Srinivasa Rao told The Hindu on Tuesday.
The runway of the airport will be temporarily closed between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. The commencement of the four-month closure period will be fixed only after announcement of the winter schedule. Fewer or no flights normally operate during the 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
In the domestic sector, Air India operates a flight to Delhi via Kannur and, in the international sector, Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines) operates a flight at around 1 p.m. “So, existing schedules will not be disturbed,” said Mr. Rao.
The widening of the fillet will protect the wide-bodied aircraft while it takes a turn from the runway to the taxiway and vice versa.
At present, the airport has four taxiways. Three taxiways will function when the work is carried out on one of them.
Mr. Rao said Emirates and Air India had not informed their flights for the winter schedule so far. Air India has planned to operate a wide-bodied flight to Jeddah while Emirates will have non-stops flights to Dubai.
