Charter major may nix UK-Goa route

Panaji: After the blow dealt to state’s tourism industry by the closure of Thomas Cook UK, the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) on Wednesday raised an additional alarm suggesting the possibility of another major charter withdrawing operations from the state.
“TUI Airways that operates the UK-Goa route three times a week may also pull out this season as it lost its preferred slot at the Goa international airport after the Navy changed runway operation timings,” TTAG president Savio Messias told TOI.
He said they have sought the intervention of Union minister of state for defence Shripad Naik in the matter. “We had a meeting with Naik on Wednesday and he informed us that he has already spoken to the Navy as well as the airport authorities,” Messias said.

The new runway timings become operational from November 2 and TTAG is upset that the Navy did not issue a NOTAM (notice to airmen) at least six months in advance, which would have helped the airline make necessary changes in its schedule.
“The TUI Airways charter will not able to land at 11.30am on Saturdays with the Navy closing the runway for operations every Saturday between 7.30am and 12.30pm for maintenance,” Messias said.
On the request of tourism secretary J Ashok Kumar, TTAG recently calculated and pegged the loss to the economy due to the collapse of the British travel company at Rs 100 crore.
