Cofeposa slapped on kingpins of gold smuggling

Thiruvananthapuram: Police have detained six main accused in a gold-smuggling case through Trivandrum International Airport after Central Economics Intelligence Bureau issued a detention order against them invoking sections of Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (Cofeposa). The accused who were detained are advocates Biju Mohan and Vishnu Somasundaram, customs superintendent Radhakrishnan, Prakashan Thampi, Sareena Shaji and jewellery staff Jaseel. They were taken into custody by the officials of District Crime Branch.

While Mohan, Thampi, Sareena and Jaseel were detained on Friday, Radhakrishnan and Somasundaram were detained on Saturday after they turned themselves in before the law enforcers. The racket was busted in April this year by officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence after two of their carriers, Sunil and Sareena Shaji, were held with 25kg of gold. This was followed by more arrests including that of advocates Mohan and Somasundaram and customs SP Radhakrishnan, who were the main conspirators in the case. The DRI found out that the gang had been active since October last year. The involvement of the customs superintendent in the case saw the anti-corruption wing of the CBI registering a case.
