Dubai man held with 717-gm gold

Amritsar: The Customs Department seized 717 gm of gold from a passenger at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport here on Sunday.
The accused has been identified as Mohammad Jilani from Dubai, who was carrying gold in paste form in his underwear.
Customs Commissioner Dipak Kumar Gupta said in a new modus operandi, the accused had wrapped gold in a black adhesive tape and hid in the belt line of his lowers, which was difficult to detect.
“He was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Staff at the airport. On a thorough search, he was found to be having illegal gold weighing 1,124.6 gm in paste form. After we got it refined, its weight came out to be 717.4 gm of 24 karat purity which was supposed to be smuggled into the country,” he said.
