Five Air India aircraft to fly high with Bapu's sketch on their tails

New Delhi: Air India will paint a picture of Mahatma Gandhi on tails one of each type of aircraft in its fleet by mid-October. The decision was taken by the divestment-bound airline’s chairman Ashwani Lohani after Bapu’s sketch was painted on the tail of one of AI’s Airbus A320s in Delhi on Wednesday, the 150th anniversary of Gandhiji.

“Dimensions of the tail of Airbus A320 (VT-CIO) are 20 feet by 8 feet. The painting on it, made by our maintenance team led by GM Mahendra Kumar and Sanjay Kumar, is 4.9 feet by 11 feet. This aircraft operated between Delhi and Mumbai on Wednesday,” said AI spokesman Dhananjay Kumar.
Seeing how well it had come out, Lohani has decided that the tails of a Boeing 747, B777, B787 and an ATR will also get a painting of Bapu within the next fortnight. So in all, five AI planes — including VT-CIO — will get a painting of Gandhiji.
