Foreign currency, gold seized at Trichy airport

Trichy: Customs officials seized foreign currencies worth Rs 3.84 lakh and gold worth Rs 15.3 lakh from two passengers at the Trichy international airport late on Sunday night. Asadh and Abdul Rahman, both from Ilaiyankudi in Sivagangai district, were the passengers detained at the airport.
The officials caught Asadh, during check-in process before boarding a flight for Kuala Lampur, with 50 notes totalling 1,200 and $100 notes totalling $4,000. The total currency value is Rs 3,84,060. The passenger was found carrying it in a handbag and also concealing it in his rectum. The customs department seized the notes and questioned him.
Abdul Rahman was caught attempting to smuggle gold from Malaysia. He was frisked by the air intelligence unit after he landed at the Trichy international airport from Malaysia by a Malindo flight on Sunday night. He had concealed a 402.5g unfinished gold chain and a 24 carat gold piece in his inner wear. The value of the gold is Rs 15.31 lakh. The officials also found 8 laptops, 300 pieces of wrist watches and an FM transceiver worth Rs 1.52 lakh.
