Jet Airways Chairman Naresh Goyal's wife Anita questioned for 8 hours by ED

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) probing diversion of funds from loans borrowed by Jet Airways in the period of over a decade on Wednesday questioned Anita Goyal, wife of former chairman of Jet Airways Naresh Goyal for eight hours.

Anita Goyal was accompanied by her lawyer who was also present in the ED office while the questioning was going on.

On August 23, ED sleuths carried out raids and searches at 12 locations across Mumbai in Maharashtra and New Delhi. Most of the premises belonged to the Goyals and Jet Airways but some of them also belonged to friends and close associates of Naresh Goyal.

Primarily the probe is being carried out in connection with the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations of Naresh Goyal and others who had allegedly misused loans borrowed from various banks and diverted it to foreign countries through ghost companies.

Naresh Goyal's statement was recorded by the agency in September and also in August when the raids were conducted at his residence in Delhi. Raids were also conducted then on the premises owned by Hasmukh Gardi a close aide of Goyal.

Gardi, a Dubai-based NRI, was a promoter of the company named Tail Winds Corporation Ltd which was floated by Naresh Goyal in the Isle of Man islands located in Europe. Gardi later also became director in Jet Airways and held the position for a long time.
The agency suspects that some elements from the underworld were also part of the initial funding for the airline. Gardi's name appeared in the Panama papers leak which is also under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. Gardi reportedly owned 30 shell companies and his Carmichael road premises were raided by the agency sleuths on Wednesday.
In May, 2019 senior officials of Jet Airways were questioned by ED officials in connection with the Jet Privilege Pvt Ltd (JPPL) deal case. The Rs 900 crore deal of Jet Aitrways's JPPL with Etihad Airways entity was under scanner.
