Karnataka man employed by carriers to smuggle in Rs 92 lakh worth of gold caught

Chennai: A 50-year-old man from Bhatkal, Karnataka who had been employed by gold smugglers operating on the UAE-Chennai sector to travel on a domestic leg from Delhi to Chennai to avoid customs officials failed to evade them.
When arrested by customs officials at Chennai airport for carrying 2.33 kg of gold worth ₹92.33 lakh, the man, Rajjak Ahmed, started crying. “He was promised ₹10,000 after delivery to an unknown man outside the airport. From Chennai, he was supposed to travel to Bhatkal by road,” said an investigating officer.
This is one of the unique cases caught by Chennai customs as usually gold carriers arrive by international flights. For this case, customs officials collected intelligence and kept a close watch on prospective suspects. Ahmed was carrying in his trousers pockets 20 ten-tola gold bars with foreign markings. He did not have any documents for the gold, officials said.
