Ahmedabad: Six months on, flyers await refunds

Ahmedabad: Jinal Shah, an Ahmedabad-based businessman had booked tickets from Ahmedabad to London for himself, his wife, daughter and in-laws for a family wedding. Having paid Rs 3.5 lakh to book his Jet Airways tickets in December 2018 for travelling in the end of April 2019. However, after the cash-strapped airline cancelled all its operations in mid-April this year, Shah was not just forced to book another flight, at a higher price, but he continues to await refund for the Jet Airways flight.

“I had booked tickets through an online travel booking website and all I have done is juggle between the airline and the portal. The airline should not have accepted bookings if it was going through such financial trouble,” said Shah.

Many passengers from Ahmedabad had booked international flights via Jet Airways; and are now awaiting refunds ranging from a few thousands to lakhs. Gauri Wagenaar, a senior faculty member at a city-based design institute, also awaits a refund of Rs 29,000. “I had booked a ticket from Ahmedabad to Amsterdam through a travel-agent in January this year for travelling in June. However, he is yet to receive any refund from the airline. Despite continuous follow-ups, there has been no response whatsoever,” she said.

It’s not only flights for which passengers are awaiting refunds. There are some who had opted for privileged credit cards wherein the airlines would offer benefits and perks on their travel. “I’ve been flying with Jet Airways for some 15 years and have been paying Rs 15,000 a year for jet privilege cards. However, I have not received any entitlements be it a ticket or an upgrade on the same for at least two years now. Despite several follow-ups, I am yet to receive a concrete response from the airline,” said Rajveer Jadeja, a businessman from Ahmedabad.
