Chennai Airport to extend bus lounge due to terminal work

Chennai: In a bid to board passengers using shuttle buses as an aerobridge will be closed for construction, Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expanding a security hold area on the ground floor of the international terminal in Chennai airport.

The area is called bus lounge as passengers wait here to be taken to the aircraft by shuttle buses. AAI had expanded space of bus lounge at domestic terminal recently as many airlines are boarding passengers at remote parking bay away from the terminal because construction is on to build an integrated terminal in the space between international and domestic terminal.

“One portion of the old international building on the first floor which was used to board passengers using aerobridges and one aerobridge will be dismantled as part of building a new terminal. This loss of space needs to be compensated. This is the reason for expanding the security hold area on the ground floor of the international terminal,” said a senior official of AAI. The space in front of the terminal at the apron will be paved and covered to extend the security hold area. More chairs will also be installed.

However, this will be a temporary arrangement, he added. The aerobridge will be reinstalled after terminal work is completed next year. Till then, more passengers will be taken by buses to board their flights at the international terminal.
