The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the late hours of Monday recovered Rs 7 lakh in cash from a passenger during the Pre-Embarkation Security Check at the Security Hold Area of Cochin Airport.
The passenger was later identified as Muhammad Shajil, who was bound for Kuala Lumpur by Malaysia Airlines.
When asked about the money, he could not produce any valid document and disclosed that he was travelling with three others, after which the CCTV footage was reviewed and all three co-passengers were located in check-in area.
All of them were intercepted and taken to the SHA for a thorough search. On checking, a high volume of Indian & foreign currencies was found.
A total of Rs 20.58 lakh, along with EUR 1200 and AUD 1950, were detected from all four passengers. The approximate value of the total recovered currency is Rs 22.48 lakh.
All four passengers and the currencies were handed over to Customs Officials for further action in the matter.
