Gold worth Rs 1.18 crore seized at Chennai airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai airport seized gold worth Rs 1.18 crore on Friday and Thursday.
On Friday, Faeizal Ahamed Bin Ashraf Ali ,40, a Malaysian national who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur in an AirAsia flight, was intercepted by officials.

The passenger, who was wearing cycling shorts, appeared to be nervous. The officials recovered two pouches of brown colour rubbery spread form weighing 650 gram, which were concealed inside his cycling shorts. On extraction 547 gram of gold, worth Rs 18.5 lakh, was recovered.

On Thursday, based on intelligence that gold was likely to be smuggled by a passenger who would conceal it in the SpiceJet flight SG 02 arriving from Colombo which would later fly to Hyderabad in its domestic leg, customs officials maintained a special watch to catch the smuggler and recover the gold.

The rummaging of the aircraft was carried out, and 23 gold bars weighing ten tolas each weighing 2.67kg and valued at Rs 1 crore were recovered from the underneath one of the seats.
