Govt fund sought for Hindon flights to three UP cities

Ghaziabad: The district administration plans to seek Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the UP government for starting flights from Hindon to Prayagraj, Lucknow and Varanasi airports as these routes do not fall under the regional connectivity scheme (RCS). The district magistrate has sought a proposal from Indigo, Heritage Aviation and Star Air in this regard.
Currently, the Star Air flights to and from Hubballi in Karnataka are the only ones operating out of Hindon airport.

Under the RCS scheme, a certain amount of VGF, or financial support, is provided to participating carriers to meet the gap, if any, between the cost of operations and expected revenues on the routes.

District magistrate Ajay Shankar Pandey said the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has informed the administration that if any airline wants to start flights to these places, it will have to seek permission from Hindon Air Force base and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). If the state government agrees to provide 100% VGF, these routes could be included in the next round of bidding, he added.

Pandey said, “The airports of Lucknow, Allahabad (Prayagraj) and Varanasi do not fall under the purview of the regional connectivity scheme, Udan (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), so only commercial flights could be allowed to operate at these places. During a meeting, I sought a proposal from Indigo, Heritage Aviation and Star Air for the flight service to the three UP districts.”

“Afterwards, I will write to the state government for 100% VGF. In the next step, permission from Hindon Air Force base and DIAL will be required by the airline,” he added.
