Haze triggers diversion, delay of morning flights

Pune: Poor visibility reigned the city’s airspace on Saturday morning, prompting diversion of a flight, delay of five departures and four late arrivals.
A SpiceJet flight coming to the city from Chennai in the morning hours was diverted to Mumbai. A source said the flight circled near the Pune airport for a while before heading to Mumbai. The low-cost carrier issued an advisory to passengers on social media, “Due to bad weather in Pune, all departures and arrivals and consequential flights might get affected.”

A passenger on board the Chennai-Pune diverted flight (SG530) said, “An announcement was made that the flight was being diverted to Mumbai due to poor visibility at the Pune airport, which was going to make landing difficult. Many passengers got angry, but no one protested because the decision was taken on the account of safety of passengers.”

A representative of the airline told TOI on Twitter, “The flight was diverted to Mumbai due to bad weather. We hope to have the passengers on their way as soon as we can.”

Five departing flights were delayed in the time slot between 6am and 9am. At least four arrivals were also delayed.
“Flights arriving mainly after 6am got affected due to poor visibility and were delayed by over an hour. A GoAir flight from Pune to Nagpur, scheduled to take off at 7.25am, was delayed by over two-and-a-half hours. IndiGo and Air India flights to Bengaluru and Delhi were also delayed moderately,” a source at the airport said.
