Chandigarh airport loses Dubai flight, left with only one overseas destination

Mohali: Chandigarh International Airport is quickly losing the international tag as Indigo suspended its Dubai flight from December 14 to February 15, fearing frequent cancellations due to poor visibility, owing to the ill-equipped airport using outdated landing system. Chandigarh is now left with only Sharjah international connection.

According to sources in Indigo Airlines, regular delays, diversions and cancellations of flights occur during the winter season at the Chandigarh airport.

Last winter, out of the 33 operational flights, around 70% saw delayed arrivals, causing inconvenience to the passengers as well as airline operators.

Notably, Punjab and Haryana high court has been pulling up the Airport Authority of India (AAI) for not operating overseas flights from the Chandigarh International Airport. The high court had already asked the authority to discontinue the International Airport tag given to the Chandigarh airport, following which AAI had submitted an affidavit stating that by March 2019, the flight operations at Chandigarh airport would be made round-the-clock.
