Gold worth Rs 1.12cr seized at airport

Chennai: Customs officials at Chennai international airport on Saturday night apprehended five passengers and seized 2.87kg of gold worth Rs 1.12 crore.

The passengers were identified as Ranasinghe Arachchige Don Lasantha Shanaka, 27,and Manathunga Arachchilage Sunimal Dhananjaya ,28, both came from Colombo by Air India Flight AI 274; Abubakar Sithik, 42, of Virudhunagar who arrived from Dubai by Emirates Airlines Flight EK 546; Mohamed Azarudeen, 26, of Sivaganga who arrived from Bangkok by Thai Airways Flight TG 337 and Jamaludeen, 35, of Ramanathapuram who arrived from Dubai by Air India Flight AI 906.

They were intercepted by Customs officers at the exit. When searched, seven gold cut bits weighing 177 grams worth Rs 7 lakh were recovered which were concealed in their pant pockets. Further on questioning, they admitted to having concealed bundles containing gold paste in the rectum. Total 17 bundles were recovered and on extraction 2.7kg gold worth Rs 1.05 crore was recovered .
