Only takeoffs from KIA’s new runway for a month

Bengaluru: Only departures will take place at the New South Parallel Runway (NSPR) at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in the initial few weeks post inauguration on December 5. Reason: Unsuitable direction of wind in the airport area.
“For at least a month after inauguration, only departures will happen from NSPR. On the day of launch too, it’ll be only takeoffs. This is because of the direction in which the wind is blowing (west-east) in the airport area at present. This will make landings difficult. No arrivals will happen at NSPR until the wind direction changes to east-west. We anticipate at least a month of just departures at the new runway,” highly-placed airport sources said.
“The NSPR will be open only for 1.5 hours in the afternoon on the day of inauguration and for a few weeks subsequently. This is because we have two connecting taxiways between NSPR and the existing runway and only one of these parallel taxiways are currently available for use,” said sources. “With 1.5 hours of operations on Day 1, controllers will also be able to get a feel of operations on the new runway,” they added.
