Pay Rs 60 to drop off at Kolkata airport arrival level

Kolkata: The next time you enter the Kolkata airport terminal in an app cab to receive someone flying into the city, be prepared to shell out Rs 60 in addition to your taxi fare or drop off at the upper-tier departure level and take a lift or staircase to get down to the arrival terminal.

The airport authorities have tweaked the app-cab restrictions at the Kolkata airport. Under these restrictions, every app cab entering the arrival level with a passenger has to pay a minimum ‘access fee’ of Rs 60. This fee is charged to the passenger by the driver. That, in turn, forces the passenger to go to the departure level, get off the vehicle and then take the elevator to the arrival level.

Authorities claimed the move is aimed at easing out the growing congestion with a number of cars being parked on the road in front of the arrival terminal throughout the day.

“Passengers flying out of the city can still drop off right outside the departure terminal. But those who get off at the arrival zone will have to pay an access fee. The move is to encourage people coming to the airport in app cabs and taxis to drop off only at the departure area and, thus, reduce congestion at the arrival zone,” said Kaushik Bhattacharya, airport director.

Officials said the move enables app cabs entering the airport to directly head to the parking lot and then to the app-cab bay to pick up passengers when they are connected. “Earlier, cabs dropping off passengers outside the arrival area had to go out of the airport, take a U turn from VIP Road and again enter the airport to pick up passengers. The move has eased that problem,” Bhattacharya added.

The move was brought into effect after the previously-designated app cab parking lot opposite the old domestic terminal was shut down to facilitate terminal-expansion work last month and the app cabs were allotted space in the basement of the airport’s car park opposite the terminal building.
