Pickpockets who struck at airport held

Nagpur: The city police have busted a gang of pickpockets and arrested three persons who had stolen wallets from a couple of Congress supporters at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar international airport on Monday. The gang struck during the welcome celebrations of MLA Nitin Raut at the airport.
The arrested have been identified as Jiyalal Jadhav (29), alias Kalu, Mehman Amir Lakha (28) and AK Shamuddin Sheikh (20). All three have several offences of thefts registered against them at different police stations in city and by Government Railway Police. While Jadhav and Lakha are from Ramai Nagar in Kamptee, Sheikh is from Timki in Mominpura.

The gang is likely to have been active on Sunday night too when former CM Devendra Fadnavis arrived in the city. According to information available, several BJP supporters too had their pockets picked but none of them filed a police complaint.

Police sources said the gang’s modus operandi was to strike at political rallies and processions. Railway stations was another crowded place targeted by the gang.

On Monday, Ajay Vishwakarma and Arvind Digwa lost money. The trio picked a packet containing Rs 48,000 in cash from the front pant pocked of Vishwakarma. In Digwa’s case, it was the hip pocket.
